During the Thursday, April 30, episode of the medical drama, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) revealed that he had fired Dr. Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) offscreen. The decision came after Richard discovered that Kwan illegally administered an experimental treatment to a patient against FDA orders.

Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) tried to take the fall for Kwan, but Richard discovered the truth.
Kwan’s firing raised questions about Shum’s future on the show, but he isn’t going anywhere just yet. Kwan appears in the teaser for the season 22 finale, which is set to air on Thursday, May 7. He sheepishly steps forward when Richard declares “an all hands on deck situation” after a nearby bridge collapse.
The promo suggests that Kwan will be needed during the emergency and likely have a chance to earn his job back.

The bridge collapse also has major consequences for Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman).

Owen takes that bridge to work,” Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) says in the teaser. Owen is then seen unconscious in a car that is slowly going underwater.

ABC previously announced that McKidd and Raver are both leaving “Grey’s Anatomy” after the season 22 finale. Although things look dire for Owen, series creator Shonda Rhimes previously hinted at a “happy ending” for the character.

“Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen — two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” Rhimes said in a statement shared with Variety in March.

As for Speedman, he left the main cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” after season 19 but stayed on in a recurring capacity. The promo shows his character, Dr. Nick Marsh, being wheeled into the hospital on a gurney wearing a neck brace.

Speedman currently stars in another ABC series, “R.J. Decker,” which is still awaiting renewal, possibly impacting his availability for future “Grey’s Anatomy” episodes.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” season 22 finale airs on ABC Thursday, May 7, at 10 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Hulu the day after they air.
