House Of The Dragon Seasons 3 & 4 Get Surprising Update From George RR Martin
Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin offers a surprising update on House of the Dragon seasons 3 and 4 ahead of season 2’s premiere.
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has offered a surprising update on House of the Dragon seasons 3 and 4, indicating a bright future for the series. The prequel follows the fracturing of the Targaryen dynasty, leading to the Dance of the Dragons. This civil war is expected to begin in season 2, which will premiere on HBO in summer 2024.
Martin has revealed in a Not A Blog post that, ahead of House of the Dragon season 2, he is already discussing story details for seasons 3 and 4 with the show’s writers. The author reveals that talks with the team happened over two days, teasing they could have gone on for much longer. Check out what Martin had to say below:
I…spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… though two days were not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure twenty days would have been enough.
How Many Seasons Will House Of The Dragon Have?
Following House of the Dragon season 1’s shocking ending, the Targaryen civil war is expected to truly begin in season 2. While the next season will consist of 8 episodes compared to 10 in season 1, it appears the number of episodes will better serve the story being told. Season 2 will consist of the early days of the war, featuring action-packed battle sequences as the larger conflict looms.
The longevity of the series had previously been addressed by HBO’s Head of Drama Francesca Orsi in May 2023, saying the show could last longer than season 4. This means Martin’s planning phase with the writing team may not consist of the entire story for the show. Depending on the level of detail the series has – coupled with Orsi’s previous comments – it’s possible House of the Dragon could last up to season 5.
While it’s still unclear just how long House of the Dragon could last, Martin’s comments about seasons 3 and 4 are good news for the length of the show. This means the Dance of the Dragons will be featured in detail, with the franchise’s creator offering key input into how it develops. With season 2 arriving next year, it remains to be seen how quickly the story progresses and what it means for the series’ future plans.
