Yellowstone is set to make a comeback on The Paramount Network and Paramount Plus later this year, with the second half of season five scheduled to premiere on November 10. Devotees of the show were devastated to learn that Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton, has decided to leave the beloved western drama due to clashes in his filming schedule.
On Instagram, he shared: “It was something that really changed me. I loved it, and I know you loved it. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning.”
He added: “I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
Costner elaborated on his departure from Yellowstone, citing his commitment over the past year and a half to both directing and acting in the movie Horizon as the reason for his exit. Fans have said they could not envision the show without its central character and are curious about how John Dutton will exit the storyline.
The series had been on a break since January 2023 amid speculation about whether the Dances with Wolves star would return. It wasn’t until June this year that fans received confirmation of when the new episodes would drop, reports the Express.
Despite the anticipation for the upcoming episodes, viewers are eager to know if Yellowstone will carry on after season five. Here’s everything there is to know about the future of the series.
Will there be a season 6 of Yellowstone?
Regrettably, Yellowstone will not see a sixth season, as Paramount has announced that the forthcoming episodes will serve as the final chapter, concluding the series after season five.
In a dramatic turn for fans, it was announced in May 2023 that while Yellowstone is set to resume production, the upcoming episodes will bring the curtain down on the adored show. However, there’s a silver lining as plans have emerged for a sequel series featuring the Dutton dynasty with reports buzzing about Matthew McConaughey leading the project.
Anticipation peaked when the sequel was pencilled in for December 2023, but due to the writers’ strike that year, it was taken off the table for the time being.
The Paramount Network has already given the green light to two further spinoffs one set in the present day and another prequel titled ‘1944’, set to follow on from ‘1883’ and ‘1923’.
Additionally, ‘1923’ is poised to return for a second and concluding season and it was hoped to coincide with Yellowstone’s final bow.
The visionary behind the show, Taylor Sheridan, spilled to The Hollywood Reporter his ambitious prequel plans: “I think there will be enough for many more [prequels] – three or four. Chris McCarthy trusts me, because I haven’t been wrong yet.”
