‘Family Matters’ Series Finale: What Happens to Steve Urkel and the Winslow Family?

For eight seasons, *Family Matters* was a cornerstone of ABC’s Friday night TGIF lineup. Debuting as a spin-off of *Perfect Strangers*, the show focused on the Winslow family and their quirky next-door neighbor. While it never achieved Emmy-level acclaim, it was a beloved hit for many years.

Throughout its run, the series underwent significant changes. Tensions arose among cast members as Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) increasingly took center stage. After Season 4, the show inexplicably wrote out one of the Winslow children, Judy Winslow (Jaimee Foxworth), making her disappear without explanation to give more focus to Urkel’s antics. By Season 9, *Family Matters* had moved to CBS after being acquired from ABC. The series finale saw additional changes, including the recasting of Harriette Winslow, played by Jo Marie Payton, who left the show. Despite the turmoil, the finale delivered a heartfelt conclusion.

Steve Urkel Goes to Space but Faces Challenges

The series finale aired as a two-part event, concluding on July 17, 1998. The final episodes, titled “Lost in Space (Part 1)” and “Lost in Space (Part 2),” centered on Steve Urkel’s space adventure. NASA decided to send Urkel into space after acquiring one of his inventions. The once clumsy and often troubled Urkel finally got his big break when an astronaut arrived at the Winslow home to announce that Steve would be the first student in space.

FAMILY MATTERS: A TALE OF TWO HARRIETTES

However, true to form, Urkel’s space journey is fraught with mishaps. After a satellite collision throws the shuttle off course, Urkel finds himself alone, with the other astronauts incapacitated. Tasked with saving the mission and getting back to Earth, Urkel faces overwhelming odds. Mission Control instructs him with a daunting number of steps—3,672—to stabilize the shuttle. Despite managing to solve some problems, Urkel’s situation becomes critical when he starts drifting into space after attempting to remove the satellite stuck to the shuttle.

The Winslows anxiously follow the news coverage, which initially reports a dire situation. However, in a classic *Family Matters* twist, Urkel ultimately succeeds, with the news anchor exclaiming in disbelief, “I can’t believe this. The nerd’s okay!”

Eddie Winslow Becomes a Cop and Faces a Crisis

Another significant plot point involves Eddie Winslow (Darius McCrary), who graduates from the police academy and becomes a Chicago cop, following in his father Carl’s (Reginald VelJohnson) footsteps. Carl is proud of his son, marking the third generation of Winslow police officers. However, Eddie’s mother, Harriette, is less enthusiastic. The final episodes of Season 9 feature a recast Harriette, with Jo Marie Payton replaced by Judyann Elder. This change made it difficult for viewers to connect emotionally with the character, but the show still attempted to incorporate Harriette’s concerns for Eddie, leading to tension when she intervened in his career. Carl confronts Harriette, who explains her actions by saying, “I was worried about Eddie and I wanted him to be safe.”
