As “NCIS: Los Angeles” approaches its series finale, fans can anticipate a memorable conclusion with plenty of surprises and returns. Executive Producer R. Scott Gemmill, who had been crafting the show’s finales to potentially double as series finales for years, knew this season would be the end for Sam (LL Cool J), Callen (Chris O’Donnell), and the rest of the Office of Special Projects team.
“We were aware this was the end, so we went all out,” Gemmill shared at the show’s wrap party on the historic Paramount lot. “We made sure to leave the characters in a place that would be fulfilling for the audience.”
The finale, split into two parts airing on May 14 and 21, will explore various key relationships, including the father-son dynamic between Retired Navy Admiral Hollace Kilbride (Gerald McRaney) and his son Alex (Christopher Gorham). Although Gemmill wished for more time to delve deeper into this storyline, he acknowledges the constraints.
McRaney, who had hoped for more exploration of the Kilbride family bond, values the opportunity to work with Marilu Henner, who plays Hollace’s ex-wife. Their off-screen conversations about Henner’s Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) added an interesting dimension to their collaboration.
Gemmill assures viewers that the finale will feature familiar faces and unexpected moments. He draws inspiration from memorable series finales like “Homeland,” “MAS*H,” and “Newhart,” aiming to deliver a satisfying end to the show’s long run.
While many cast members are open to future appearances on other “NCIS” series, the immediate focus is on the series finale. Eric Christian Olsen (Marty Deeks) and Chris O’Donnell both expressed enthusiasm for new projects but also a readiness to revisit their roles if the opportunity arises.
LL Cool J, reflecting on the finale, hints that not everyone may make it out alive. He promises that while the finale will be fun and engaging, its ultimate satisfaction will vary for different viewers.
