Simon Cowell Reflects on Fatherhood: How His Son Eric Changed His Work-Life Balance

In a heartfelt interview with The Sun, Simon Cowell shared how becoming a father to his 10-year-old son, Eric, transformed his approach to work.

Cowell, 63, admitted that before Eric’s arrival, his life revolved around his career. “Before Eric, my life was 99 percent work,” he recalled, emphasizing that he was “obsessed” with it. Now, he acknowledges that Eric has helped him find a healthier balance. “I don’t work through the night anymore,” he said, expressing gratitude for the positive shift in his priorities.

Reflecting on the profound love he feels for Eric, Cowell explained, “After I lost my mum and dad, you think you’re never going to feel that love again. Then you have kids, and it’s beyond anything you could imagine.” He noted that becoming a dad prompted him to consider the legacy he wants to leave for Eric.

Cowell recounted how, during his peak workdays, he often found himself working late into the night, leading to feelings of burnout and unhappiness. He noted that Eric’s innocent curiosity about his work habits made him reconsider his lifestyle. “When he was about 2, he asked, ‘What are you doing in bed at 2 in the afternoon?’ That was a wake-up call,” he said.

The media mogul also mentioned how Eric’s energy inspires him. “They’re never tired,” he laughed, highlighting how seeing the world through his son’s eyes has given him a fresh perspective. Eric even plays a role in Cowell’s creative process, serving as a “barometer” for what will engage audiences.

Moreover, Cowell’s approach to judging contestants has softened since Eric was born. “I couldn’t deal with the idea of him being bullied,” he said, noting he’s become “100 percent” more sensitive in how he provides feedback.

Looking ahead, Cowell and Eric are collaborating on a series of children’s books called Wishfits, featuring imaginary animals. “It’s been brilliant,” Cowell said, expressing his joy in working on this project with his son.
