Per Variety, Benedict’s love story will be lifted from the books. An Offer From a Gentleman sees Benedict fall for a mysterious “lady in silver,” who turns out to be commoner Sophie Baek. A non-ton, so to speak.
Showrunner Jess Brownell went out of book order for these seasons, giving us Polin before the Lady in Silver because she wanted to explore Benedict’s pansexuality. “I knew that people out there had a feeling Benedict might be queer,” Brownell told Variety. “And personally, it made sense to me. He’s not just open minded, it’s that he seems like the type of person who wouldn’t be as concerned with gender — someone who might be more fluid and pansexual.” Hence the threesome. But now “he’s trying to find something a bit more solid in himself,” Luke Thompson (who plays Benedict) told Tudum.
