Are Those Daenerys’ Dragon Eggs In House Of The Dragon Season 2, Episode 3?

After Rhaenyra shows Rhaena the four dragon eggs that she’s sending with her away from Dragonstone, House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 begs the question of whether those are Daenerys’ eggs in Game of Thrones. In the pilot of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen is presented with three dragon eggs in Essos as a wedding gift, despite the fact that dragons died out nearly 150 years before her time. Tying into Aegon’s Prince That Was Promised prophecy and enhancing Daenerys’ claim to the Iron Throne, her eggs end up hatching in Game of Thrones’ season 1 finale, bearing the dragons Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.

With House Targaryen’s family history being explored in depth in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book, one of the biggest questions that remained after Game of Thrones was which Targaryen dragon laid the eggs from which Dany’s hatched. House of the Dragon provided the perfect chance to show the origins of Dany’s dragons, and season 2 appears to have subtly taken this opportunity. In House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3, Rhaenyra gives Rhaena four dragon eggs to ultimately take to Pentos, three of which have the same coloring as Daenerys’ dragon eggs in Game of Thrones.

Those Apparently Are Daenerys’ Dragon Eggs In House Of The Dragon Season 2, Episode 3

While it’s still somewhat ambiguous in the show itself, House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 director Geeta Vasant Patel confirmed to Mashable that those are Daenerys’ dragon eggs in the chamber. Patel stated, “Those are Daenerys’ eggs… All of us who work on this show are big Game of Thrones fans, so it was very exciting to shoot that scene.” Now that House of the Dragon has confirmed Dany’s eggs are in Rhaenyra’s (more specifically, Rhaena’s) possession, it remains to be seen how the HBO prequel will plant the seeds of Dany’s eggs eventually ending up in the hands of the Pentoshi Magister Illyrio.

Furthermore, House of the Dragon also introduces the question of what happened to the fourth, blue egg in Rhaena’s care. Daenerys’ dragon eggs are the red, gold, and green ones in the chamber, but there’s also a mysterious blue egg among them. Considering she doesn’t have a dragon in House of the Dragon, the blue one could be the egg that ends up hatching into Rhaena’s book dragon. In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book, one of Rhaena’s eggs ends up hatching at the Eyrie, giving her the pink-scaled dragon Morning, one of the few to survive the Dance.

Has House Of The Dragon Changed The Story Of Daenerys’ Dragon Eggs?

House of the Dragon debunks a long-held theory about the eggs’ origins

It’s unclear whether Dany’s eggs being in the possession of Rhaenyra changes their story, but it certainly departs from the most popular theory and book implication of their origin. While it’s now implied that Danaerys’ eggs were laid by Rhaenyra’s dragon Syrax, it was long understood – but not confirmed – that Dany’s dragons were hatched from Dreamfyre’s eggs, then taken to Essos by Elissa Farman during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. Helaena’s dragon has largely been missing from House of the Dragon’s story, but Dreamfyre’s theorized link to Daenerys gave her a greater legacy in Game of Thrones’ overall narrative.

Rhaena was the last-known dragonrider before Game of Thrones ’ dragons all died out, with Daenerys then being both the first dragonrider in nearly 150 years and the last-ever dragonrider in Westeros.

While not necessarily a retcon, given its lack of an official confirmation, House of the Dragon reveals the real backstory of Dany’s eggs as quite different. However, there is a more powerful symmetry in Rhaena being the one to transport Daenerys’ eggs to Essos, and potentially even having her dragon hatch from the same clutch. According to Fire & Blood, Rhaena was the last-known dragonrider before Game of Thrones’ dragons all died out, with Daenerys then being both the first dragonrider in nearly 150 years and the last-ever dragonrider in Westeros.
