Rob Reiner: Archie Bunker Would Have Dismayed by Trump Post-Jan. 6

In a recent CNN interview, Rob Reiner, the iconic actor behind Archie Bunker, discussed how the January 6th Capitol insurrection would have driven the beloved character away from Donald Trump. Reiner reflected on a New York Times op-ed by Norman Lear, the creator of All in the Family, which suggested that while Archie might have initially supported Trump, he would have been appalled by the violence against Capitol Police.

“I believe Archie would have been deeply disturbed by the sight of cops being attacked,” Reiner stated. “As more information emerged about Trump’s involvement, he would likely align with figures like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger,” referring to the Republican lawmakers who investigated Trump’s role in the events.

Reiner further emphasized the growing division within Trump’s base, noting, “People are starting to distance themselves from him, leaving behind only the more extreme factions.” He also pointed out the troubling rise of Christian nationalism, suggesting that it has cast Trump in a “God-like” light for some supporters.

Throughout All in the Family, Reiner played Michael Stivic, Archie’s liberal son-in-law, and their frequent political clashes have made the character a cultural touchstone. Ironically, Reiner has been called “meathead” by Trump loyalists, a term originally used by Archie to mock Michael.
