The Next Game Of Thrones Spinoff Begins Filming In Early 2024

The next Game of Thrones spinoff show after House of the Dragon starts filming in early 2024 pending the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight should start filming in early 2024 after the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, according to HBO network chief Casey Bloys. The laboriously titled Game of Thrones spinoff show is based on the Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin, which follows the adventures of the titular characters throughout Westeros 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The prequel has been in development at HBO since 2021, though recently it has suffered delays due to the dual strikes.
During a Q&A at a recent press event (via Variety), Bloys said that he expects filming on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight to start next spring, pending the end of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The HBO boss also announced that House of the Dragon season 2 will premiere sometime later in the “early summer” of 2024.
When Will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight Arrive?

After years of development, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight received a straight-to-series order from HBO in April 2023. However, development was shut down for the duration of the WGA strike, as announced by George R.R. Martin, who is an executive producer on the show. Since the strike officially ended in September, the show’s writers room, which is headed by House of the Dragon’s Ira Parker, has been able to resume work.

However, it’s unclear why A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight has to wait for the SAG-AFTRA strike to end to start shooting. House of the Dragon season 2 was able to shoot through the SAG-AFTRA strike since production took place in the United Kingdom with actors working under a different union called Equity. Bloys indicating that shooting the spinoff is dependent on the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike suggests it won’t follow House of the Dragon’s example and use only Equity actors.
To use House of the Dragon season 2 as a comparison, that started filming in April 2023 and is scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2024. However, production of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight should be shorter since the show is Much smaller in scale and takes place during a period of relative peace in Westeros, meaning there won’t be any big battles or VFX dragons. With this in mind, the next Game of Thrones spinoff could arrive as early as late 2024.
