Ghosts season 3’s departed spirit gets explained by showrunners as they reveal if they could return. In the season 2 finale, Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) were sitting in their car outside their estate only to see a bright light, seemingly indicating one of the characters crossing over. Though there was speculation that it would be one of the minor characters or even an overall misunderstanding, the resolution in the season 3 premiere proved to be significant.
Speaking with TVLine about the Ghosts season 3 premiere, showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman addressed whether Sheila Carrasco, who portrays Flower, is really gone after being absent in the debut episode of the CBS comedy, saying, “she’s the one that we’re losing in this first episode” but teased that “this is a world where we can see people in all different realms, and we’re not saying that this is the last you’ll ever see of Flower.” At one point, the showrunners were directly asked whether Flower had even moved on or whether it was just a case of the character being forgetful, revealing “anything is possible” and teasing that “there’s going to be all kinds of twists and turns throughout the season.”
Why The Ghosts Season 3 Reveal Is So Significant
Before the season 3 premiere, there was speculation that the cliffhanger could be misleading in some way. It could have been only a minor ghost that moved on, one without a strong connection to the main characters. Alternatively, as the showrunners are asked, none of the spirits may have moved on. But at least for the premiere episode, there is a significant resolution to the Ghosts season 2 finale.
Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long), who has developed feelings for Flower, has to process her loss. The same is true of Sam, who realizes that she isn’t quite as ready as she believed herself to be in terms of saying goodbye to the spirits she communicates with. There is no suggestion in the season 3 debut, “The Owl” — written by John Blickstead and Trey Kollmer and directed by Jay Karas — that Flower hasn’t moved on.
Carrasco, who reportedly received a salary increase for Ghosts season 3, along with the rest of the cast, may continue to appear in some form. But the show has, for now, reinforced its themes of moving on and finding closure by writing off one of the main characters. It also points to a potentially bittersweet finale, in which all or most spirits have moved on.
