The Legacy of a Comedy Legend: Remembering John Ritter

Joyce DeWitt attended a very special event recently in honor of her former co-star. DeWitt starred in Three’s Company alongside John Ritter and Suzanne Somers. Both have since passed away. The 75-year-old appeared at a gala called An Evening from the Heart presented by The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health. Ritter passed away in 2003 at the age of 54 from a misdiagnosed acute aortic dissection after collapsing on the set of his show 8 Simple Rules.

DeWitt wasn’t the only co-star who attended the event. 8 Simple Rules star Kaley Cuoco attended to show her support for the cause and Ritter’s family. Cuoco shared, “He touched a lot of lives,” and added, “I will do anything for his wife and his kids. And I’m so really very proud to be here and honoring him.”

Ritter’s widow Amy Yasbeck and his four children have worked on the foundation for the past twenty years to bring awareness to the condition. At the event, Yasbeck opened up about the heartwarming way the family pays tribute to Ritter. She said, “All we do is we send each other videos of physical comedy or people falling down, or having a bird poop on them, or something. We say, ‘John would’ve’ or ‘Dad would’ve loved this.’ And you don’t even have to say it, because we all share that appreciation of physical comedy like he did.”

Yasbeck added that despite losing her husband over twenty years ago, she is still not ready to find someone new. She explained, “I don’t date. I mean, it could happen. I’m not in the mood. I think I would miss John more if I was dating, as weird as that sounds. But because I always feel like he’s with me, and that would be weird because in that case, three is not company.”
