The Rookie Finale Preview: Is [Spoiler] Gonna Die? Plus, Will an Upsetting Cliffhanger End the Season?
The table has been set, and the stakes raised, for The Rookie‘s Season 6 finale, airing Tuesday, May 21 on ABC.
A lot happened in this week’s episode, which opened with Bradford (played by Eric Winter) being quickly benched after he was basically framed, by Pearson, for Mad Dog’s death (which was actually a suicide). Chen (Melissa O’Neill) went undercover as a nanny for one of the underworld’s premiere money launderers, only to learn that Monica (Bridget Regan) would be paying visits. Monica got a bead on those who tried to kill her, thanks to “Cruz Castillo” (guest star A Martinez), but is on the verge of having her role in the ambush of Bradford’s Metro team found out, now that LAPD shrink Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell) has agreed to flip on the sinister ginger.
Did Dr. London just book herself an appointment with death, by telling Nolan she’d name her puppet master? TVLine spoke with The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley on the red carpet at Disney’s Upfront, and in the video above, he teases a prognosis for the not-so-good doctor.
Hawley and series lead/exec producer Nathan Fillion then weigh in on what has made Regan’s Monica one of TV’s best snakes-in-the grass. Hawley next shares if Bradford will be back on duty in time for the season-ending action, and whether we’ll check in on Nolan’s wife Bailey (played by Jenna Dewan, who was MIA this week) once more before the season is over.
As for the on-again, off-again #Chenford pairing, Winter had already told TVLine that he and scene partner O’Neill have “some fun stuff together” in the finale, including “another great action sequence.”
“It leaves a nice sort of, I wouldn’t say closure or a guarantee of anything, but it leaves it in a place where there’s stuff to talk about” in Season 7, Winter said.
All told, how will The Rookie close out its season, with viewers having to wait at least eight months for the light procedural’s uninterrupted, 18-episode Season 7? Hawley and Fillion tease that in the video’s closing seconds.
But wait, there’s more! In the video below, Mekia Cox teases “big action” and a “familiar face” in the finale, and weighs in on the very fun Nyla/Angela dynamic this season:
