New Ghosts TV Series Reportedly in Development at BBC Australia

The beloved supernatural sitcom Ghosts is set for yet another remake, following the success of the US adaptation. Originally airing on BBC One, the British version delighted audiences for five seasons from April 2019 to December 2023. The series was remade by CBS in 2021, with Season 4 premiering on October 17, 2024. Much like The Office, Ghosts has proven to be a versatile concept that can adapt to various cultures and settings.

According to Deadline, BBC Australia is developing a new version of Ghosts, taking inspiration from both the UK and US series. The Australian adaptation will premiere on Paramount+ and Network 10, centering on a couple, Sean and Kate, who inherit a haunted mansion. Unbeknownst to them, it’s inhabited by a group of restless spirits who need Kate’s assistance—she has the unique ability to see them. Daniel Monaghan, Paramount Australia’s SVP of Content & Programming, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Ghosts has been a smash hit in the UK and U.S. and has attracted a very loyal fanbase here in Australia. We can’t wait to bring to life our very own series with an Aussie twist.”

Additionally, Deadline reported that more than one new version of Ghosts is in the works, with remakes also planned for Spain and Germany. Matt Forde from BBC Studios Global Entertainment confirmed that they are exploring local adaptations, stating, “We love those shows and the UK versions. We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.”

The Expanding Ghosts Franchise

Both the UK and US adaptations of Ghosts have garnered significant success, though the original remains particularly revered. Each version has put its own spin on the story, ensuring a fresh experience for viewers. The upcoming Australian series promises to do the same, incorporating local history and cultural elements to engage audiences.

Similar to the CBS version, which introduced different characters to create a unique narrative, the Australian adaptation is likely to feature stories from Australia’s rich history, while maintaining the core premise of a couple facing challenges from the spirits in their haunted home. This expansion of the Ghosts franchise highlights its global appeal and the potential for success in diverse markets if executed thoughtfully.
