Tom Selleck is expressing his frustration following CBS’s decision to cancel Blue Bloods after 14 successful seasons. Since the show debuted in 2010, Selleck has portrayed Commissioner Frank Reagan, becoming a beloved figure in the crime drama.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, the 79-year-old actor did not shy away from his feelings about the cancellation. “I’m kind of frustrated,” he admitted. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods, but about it still being wildly successful.”
Selleck highlighted the show’s impressive viewership, noting that it ranked number 9 out of the Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024. “If you discount the three football shows, we’re #6!” he stated. He pointed out that the show’s consistent performance over the years should have warranted more recognition from the network. “My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go,” he reflected.
Recalling the experience of filming the final episode, Selleck noted the emotional toll it took on him. “After the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I realized there was no Monday,” he shared. “It’s just going to take a while.”
When asked what he would miss most about the series, Selleck’s answer was immediate: “The actors. The family of actors is as close as the Reagan family and the characters they play.” He praised the camaraderie among the cast, emphasizing that there was no petty jealousy, which often plagues television productions.
While Selleck grapples with the end of Blue Bloods, CBS Studios President David Stapf has hinted at the possibility of a spinoff, stating, “There are endless possibilities… we still have a whole season to go.”
In a previous interview, Selleck also expressed concerns about the financial implications of the show’s cancellation, revealing that he might struggle to maintain his California ranch without the income from Blue Bloods. However, he reassured fans that he has no plans to retire from Hollywood.
As the series draws to a close, Selleck’s reflections underscore not just his disappointment, but also the deep connections forged over the years on set.
