Nicola Coughlan’s LGBTQ+ Storyline in Bridgerton: A Closer Look

Nicola Coughlan is looking forward to the LGBTQ relationship in an upcoming season of Bridgerton.

The Irish actress recently opened up about how “amazing” the new season of Bridgerton will be. She was the lead of season three, which was one of Netflix most streamed series of 2024.

The new season will follow Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and his love interest Sophie Baek, played by newcomer Yerin Ha. It has started production in England.

While fans eagerly await the new season, some are curious about a new plot line that was introduced last season. It was revealed that the character of Francesca Bridgerton, one of the younger in the titular family, will eventually get a queer storyline.

It suggested in season three that Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd, will fall in love with a woman, Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. This is a deviation from the books, as Francesca found her match in a gentleman named Michael Stirling.

Coughlan told Good Morning America of the upcoming story: “”I know as a cast, we’ve been really craving a queer storyline and that representation is so, so important.

“I just know that it’s going to be done so well by Hannah and Masali. They’re going to do an incredible job. Whenever their time comes, they’re going to be ready, and they’re going to knock it out of the park.”

Author of the books Julia Quinn is excited about the change from the sixth Bridgerton novel, titled When He Was Wicked, saying the queer storyline will be a refreshing twist. While some fans were upset over the difference, she took to Instagram to say she supported it.

“It will be the most emotional and heart-wrenching story of the show, just like When He Was Wicked has always been the true tear-jerker of the Bridgerton book series,” she said.
