Jensen Ackles Set to Make a Bigger Impression on Tracker Season 2 With Dramatic Role

Jensen Ackles is heading back to Tracker. The Supernatural alum is set to return as Russell Shaw, the estranged older brother of lead star Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw, in the CBS drama’s forthcoming second season.

Per TheWrap, Hartley revealed during the Tracker presentation at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour that Ackles would be back as Russell Shaw for Season 2. “We got him, he’s coming back,” the actor confirmed. “We’re having fun with that, it’s a great story.” Showrunner Elwood Reid added that Ackles will appear in more than one episode, hinting that the actor and character would be part of a multi-episode story arc that he was “particularly excited” about.

“I’ve worked with Jensen previously and Justin’s friends with him,” Elwood continued, referencing his time as showrunner on ABC’s Big Sky, which added Ackles as a main cast member for its third and final season. “It’s like family — when we text him [he says], ‘tell me where and tell me when,’ and he shows up. He’s just that kind of guy.” Ackles made his debut as Russell Shaw in the penultimate episode of Season 1, “Off the Books,” which aired on CBS on May 12.

Jensen Ackles Set to Lead New Prime Video Series
The news that Ackles will be part of Tracker Season 2 comes after fan speculation that the actor might not be able to return due to commitments with his upcoming Prime Video series, Countdown. Announced in June 2024, Countdown was developed specifically for Ackles, who previously worked with Prime Video on its popular superhero series The Boys.

The upcoming thriller series begins with “a suspicious murder in broad daylight, which leads to LAPD officer Mark Meachum (Ackles) being recruited to join a secret task force of undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement to investigate. But as the truth of a more sinister plot comes into focus, the team must overcome their conflicting personal agendas to unite and save a city of millions.”

Joining Ackles in Countdown will be Jessica Camacho (The CW’s The Flash) as Amber Oliveras, a “Special Agent, Drug Enforcement Agency with 14 years on the job. Undercover in multiple operations. She’s a badass who won’t take crap from anyone. She’s intrigued by this new opps team and though she seems to do well enough on her own, it’ll be a nice change of pace working with others.” The first season of Countdown will consist of 13 episodes and was created by Derek Haas, who will serve as showrunner.

The first season of Tracker is available to stream on Paramount+, while the second season is scheduled to premiere on CBS on Oct. 27.
