When most people talk about the top sitcoms from the ‘90s, there are a handful of shows that are always quickly brought up. For example, there is no way to think about ‘90s television comedies without bringing to mind series like Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Seinfeld among others. While that certainly makes some sense since all of those shows were extremely popular, it is a shame that some other sitcoms from the ‘90s don’t get enough credit.
Of all the ‘90s sitcoms that are still worth watching today but don’t get enough attention, Family Matters may just top that list. After all, Family Matters told some truly important stories over the years and it also made the masses laugh an awful lot. Once it is clear that Family Matters should be discussed more, the next question that comes to mind is what are the show’s stars up to now? For example, since Kellie Shanygne Williams brought the much-beloved character Laura Winslow to life, it would be great to know how her life is going.
Kellie Shanygne Williams Has Broken The Former Child Star Curse
When most people think about former child stars, there is one thing that comes to mind first and foremost, all of the actors who were stars as kids and then had legal troubles. With that in mind, after Kellie Shanygne Williams rose to fame as a youngster due to her role starring in Family Matters, there were very valid reasons to worry about her future.
Unfortunately, at one point it seemed very likely that the former child star curse was coming for the stars of Family Matters. After all, a former young actor who starred in Family Matters was accused of a very serious crime. Thankfully, however, from all accounts, it seems like Kellie Shanygne Williams has become a well-adjusted adult who is in no danger of grappling with legal problems in the future. While there is no way to know exactly how Williams avoided the traps that many of her former peers have fallen into, the fact that she seems like a happy mother and wife may play a part in that.
Is Kellie Shanygne Williams Still Acting?
After Kellie Shanygne Williams starred in Family Matters from 1989 until 1998, she should have had Hollywood agents banging down her door. After all, it is rare for an actor to star in a hit show for nearly a decade. On top of that, Willams’ portrayal of Laura Winslow played a key role in the show’s success since many of the show’s storylines revolved around her character.
Sadly, in the years that followed Family Matters coming to an end, Kellie Shanygne Williams only popped up in a handful of roles. Worse yet, it is worth noting that the projects that Williams was a part of at that time were primarily marketed to black audiences which indicates an obvious racism problem in the entertainment business.
Fortunately, it seems like things might finally be turning around a little for Williams though as she starred in the movie Christmas in Carolina in 2000. Amazingly enough, Williams co-starred in that film with the man who used to play Family Matters’ Eddie Winslow, Darius McCrary. On top of that, Williams has another movie coming out, 2022’s Merry Little Switchmas, which co-stars her former TV mom, Jo Marie Payton.
