Simon Cowell is gearing up for a thrilling season of America’s Got Talent as the show unveils its revamped live show format. Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of the season’s return, Cowell shared his enthusiasm for the new dynamics viewers can expect.
“This year, we had a ton of great talent, making it difficult to narrow it down to just 36 acts,” Cowell explained. The new structure allows for more performers, but with higher stakes—only two acts will move on to the finals each night, one through viewer votes and another selected by the judges.
Cowell believes this change will enhance the excitement of the live shows. “Not knowing what will happen adds a thrilling element,” he noted, contrasting it with last year’s format where seven acts advanced per night, which he felt lacked tension.
The live shows will take place at the Pasadena Civic Center over six weeks, with results airing the following night. Cowell is particularly eager to see how his Golden Buzzer act, 14-year-old singer Sara James, will perform again, encouraging her to take risks and push her boundaries.
With the new format, the pressure on contestants increases, but Cowell is optimistic about the potential for standout performances. As the season progresses, viewers can look forward to dramatic moments leading up to the finale, where the top 11 finalists will compete for a chance to win $1 million and perform in Las Vegas.
