Tom Selleck is expressing his disappointment over CBS’ decision to conclude Blue Bloods after 14 seasons and over 285 episodes. In an interview with TV Insider, he revealed, “I’m kind of frustrated,” emphasizing that the show has been a stable presence on CBS for over a decade. Selleck pointed out that during the final stretch of episodes, he wished to focus on the show’s success rather than its impending end.
While he doesn’t hold a grudge against the network and understands that all shows eventually conclude, Selleck struggles to comprehend why Blue Bloods, which debuted in 2010 and consistently performed well, was taken for granted. He noted, “If you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.”
Accepting the series’ end will take time for Selleck. Reflecting on the transition, he shared, “I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday.”
As for the series finale, he hinted at an emotional family dinner that mirrors the show’s tradition of gathering the Reagan family for Sunday meals. “My last scene was ironically family dinner. That was also the first scene I shot on the show 15 years ago,” Selleck explained. He described the atmosphere during filming as filled with “crying and an enormous amount of hugs.”
CBS has maintained its stance on ending the series, with CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach stating that it was important to give the show the sendoff it deserves. Despite this, several cast members have voiced hopes for a renewal after the second half of Season 14, with Selleck mentioning, “I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses.”
Blue Bloods follows the Reagan family, New York City’s law enforcement first family, with Selleck starring as police commissioner Frank Reagan. The series, featuring Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and Andrew Terraciano, will return to CBS for its midseason premiere on October 18.
