Jonathan Bailey: From Viscount Bridgerton to the Wicked Witch of the West

In 2024’s Wicked, Jonathan Bailey is taking on the role of Fiyero Tigelaar, a character who is surprisingly similar to the role that originally boosted him to fame. Wicked is an upcoming movie adaptation based on the stage musical and the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire. A spin on The Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the story of how Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West became friends at school before Dorothy arrived in Oz. Wicked’s movie adaptation will come in two parts, with the first being released on November 22, 2024.

After taking on the starring role in Bridgerton season 2, Bailey has become a highly sought-after actor. In 2023, he gave an emotional performance in the Showtime series Fellow Travelers, and after his casting in Wicked, he earned a highly coveted spot in the next Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World Rebirth. Despite his influx of roles, though, Bailey’s characters are not always super distinct from each other. At least when it comes to Wicked and Bridgerton, there are some serious similarities between Fiyero and Anthony Bridgerton.

Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero Story In Wicked Will Be Very Similar To Anthony’s In Bridgerton

How Fiyero’s Romantic Story Will Align With Anthony’

Wicked takes place in a time-period and world that is entirely different from the Regency London setting of Bridgerton, yet Bailey’s portrayal of Fiyero may not be all that different from his role as Anthony. First and foremost, both Fiyero and Anthony are men who are wealthy and powerful. Anthony is a Viscount with control of his family’s entire estate, while Fiyero is a certified prince. Furthermore, both characters are considered to be handsome, eligible bachelors who are flirtatious, but hesitant to settle down with any one person, making them all the more desirable.

It isn’t just their circumstances that make Fiyero and Anthony similar either. In many ways, their romantic plotlines will also converge in interesting ways. During Bridgerton season 2, Anthony falls in love with Kate Sharma, an unconventional match who he initially dislikes. A very similar scenario occurs for Fiyero. Although Galinda is the ideal choice for him, he begins to develop feelings for Elphaba, despite her status as an outcast and their opposing personalities. In some ways, Wicked may be a small-scale replay of Bridgerton season 2, at least romantically.

The Qualities That Separate Wicked’s Fiyero From Anthony In Bridgerton

Fiyero Is Much More Fun Than Anthony

Of course, Fiyero and Anthony aren’t completely alike. Where Anthony tends to be rather serious and uptight, Fiyero is the complete opposite. He is optimistic, joyful, and carefree. He even sings a song called “Dancing Through Life,” which explains his philosophy of just enjoying life, regardless of the bad things going on. It seems likely that Bailey’s portrayal of Fiyero will be much more fun than his portrayal of AnthonyWicked has much more room to be silly and strange than Bridgerton does.
