Blue Bloods star Abigail Hawk opens up about the possibility of a spinoff. With the long-running CBS drama currently airing its final episodes as part of Blue Bloods season 14 and the series finale set for December, the Reagan family is saying their goodbyes. But that is complicated by the fact that a top executive at Paramount Global, which owns CBS, mentioned that the hit police procedural is a candidate for a spinoff.
However, in an interview with HELLO! to preview the show’s ending, Hawk suggested that the Reagans would probably not be involved in a Blue Bloods spinoff. Hawk, who plays Detective Abigail Baker on the CBS show, confirmed that there had been discussions about a possible spinoff. However, she noted that it would likely have to occur in a different city and follow a different family. Hawk’s quote is included below:
There was talk of a spin-off happening. But if it did happen, so immediately after our series ends, it would have to be not involving the Reagan’s or the NYPD at all. It would have to be set in LA or we follow a different family.
What Hawk’s Comments Could Mean For Blue Bloods’ Future
Blue Bloods season 14, which airs Fridays at 8 PM ET on CBS, will be the last because of the high costs associated with the long-running series. The cast and crew reportedly had to agree to a pay cut to ensure that the final season would even happen. But the police drama is still popular and gains consistent viewership in the ratings, so it would make sense that CBS would attempt to move forward with a spinoff.
However, there are no details currently known about the Blue Bloods spinoff. The possibility was floated in passing by a top executive at Paramount Global earlier this year. But since then, there have been no rumors detailing what the potential spinoff would consist of or who the new show might follow. It could be that CBS is waiting for the main series to end before discussing any possible follow-ups.
Our Take On A Blue Bloods Spinoff
CBS has had success with taking a premise and simply moving it to a different location, with both CSI and NCIS coming to mind. But it should be said that Blue Bloods is different, with so much of the show’s appeal coming down to the family at the center and the world that executive producer Kevin Wade has helped to build. Not to mention a cast that includes Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, and Vanessa Ray. A spinoff may not be the same without their presence.
