Rebecca Wisocky: No Ghosts, Just Great Characters

Rebecca Wisocky doesn’t believe in ghosts, but she certainly brings one to life on the CBS comedy Ghosts. In this American adaptation of the British sitcom, a group of spirits haunts an old mansion in upstate New York. When Samantha (Rose McIver) moves in, she gains the unique ability to see and communicate with the ghosts after a near-death experience.

A seasoned character actor, Wisocky is known for her roles in Devious Maids, American Horror Story, and Dopesick. In Ghosts, she portrays Hetty Woodstone, a no-nonsense woman from the Gilded Age who has plenty to say about etiquette and, amusingly, cocaine use. Over the three seasons, Hetty has undergone a significant transformation, exploring facets of herself that include, humorously, the discovery of masturbation. “The more I delve into this character, the more I enjoy playing her curious and childlike sides,” Wisocky shares. The show has recently returned for its fourth season, just in time for Halloween, and Wisocky is also set to appear in a Lydia Tár-inspired role on Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Here, Wisocky opens up about her unique costume, memorable moments on set, and her quirky rules for life.

Do you ever get tired of wearing Hetty’s costume?

Of course, it can be uncomfortable, but I love it! It really helps inform my performance. Learning how she died adds layers to my portrayal—she’s been in that corset for 130 years, plus there’s a noose around her neck. It’s powerful for the character.

What’s been a standout moment from season four?

We all share a theater background, which helps us support each other as an ensemble. Every day brings something zany! This season introduces a new character, Patience, played by Mary Holland, who’s even more uptight than Hetty. The dynamics create some hilarious scenarios.

What’s your top rule for hosting a dinner party?

As inspired by Curb Your Enthusiasm, being a great dinner guest means being a good conversationalist—someone who can keep discussions lively and connect people. I’m lucky to have friends who excel at this, making our gatherings enjoyable.

What’s the last app you downloaded?

I recently got into pickleball and downloaded the Playbypoint app to book court time. It’s surprising how much I enjoy it!

What’s your top rule for raising a child?

I was adopted and raised by parents who didn’t have a clue how to raise an artistic kid like me, yet they created an environment that allowed me to be myself. I’m incredibly grateful for that.

What’s your number one fashion rule?

Know your proportions and embrace a uniform. I’m not very adventurous with fashion. I feel most confident in styles that are comfortable and flattering—I love a good suit!

Would you send an Edible Arrangement?

Not really my style. An exposed melon ball doesn’t appeal to me. I’m not a fan of receiving flowers, but I enjoy sending them.
