Netflix has officially confirmed that Virgin River will return for a seventh season, making the show one of the longest-running scripted English-language series in Netflix’s history, alongside Orange is the New Black and Grace & Frankie. The upcoming season will feature a shortened 10 episodes, but no official release date has been announced yet.
Earlier this year, there were rumors suggesting that filming for the new season could start by the end of 2024, but those speculations have now been debunked.
The latest update comes from one of the show’s stars, Tim Matheson, who plays the beloved character Doc Mullins. In a recent interview with Instagram influencer Anna Daly, Matheson revealed that production for Virgin River season 7 is slated to begin in March 2025. He also shared his excitement about the future of the show, stating, “I love the feeling of the show, and also the cast and crew have all become like family. It’s wonderful that we now think of each other as family.”
Matheson reflected on his role as Doc Mullins, noting, “It’s one of my favorite experiences, and I love the show. I enjoy playing Doc because I’ve portrayed a lot of doctors, and I did a lot of research on country doctors who work in small towns. You really know your patients and have a personal connection with them—it’s a different kind of medicine. This story is about a man who left the hustle and bustle of the city to return to treating patients one-on-one, and I love that.”
Filming for season 7 will take place in Vancouver, Canada, where all six previous seasons were shot. A spring start in March makes sense, as the weather in the region typically warms up after the harsh winter months—a challenge that actors like Alexandra Breckenridge have mentioned in past interviews.
Based on previous production timelines, Virgin River seasons usually take around four months to film, meaning the new season could wrap up by mid-summer 2025. If that’s the case, it’s likely that season 7 will premiere sometime in late 2025 or possibly early 2026.
Fans are also eagerly awaiting news on the Virgin River spin-off, though it seems we may need to wait for the response to the backdoor pilot episode in season 6 before any official updates are provided.
