CBS set a date for the series finale of BLUE BLOODS while also announcing a special retrospective special of the show set to help fans commemorate it before it ends.
After 14 seasons, BLUE BLOODS will air its final episode on Friday, Dec. 13, at 10 p.m. on CBS.
The finale has been a long time coming since CBS announced the show was ending last fall. Though the cast fought hard to keep it going — even taking major pay cuts so Season 14 would be feasible — and fans campaigned to keep the show alive, the network has stayed the course and brought the beloved show to an end. The cancelation of the show stemmed from financial concerns, as the Reagan family still had much more story to give.
“CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it. The show’s more popular than ever, and I think [numbers] will increase with the interest this year. We’re certainly not out of ideas,” star Tom Selleck said in March. “I’m not counting the days so I can do something else. I love the work. Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what? I want work as long as they’ll have me.”
With the cancelation of the show now inevitable, the creators of the show have worked hard to make the final episodes as special as possible.
“We always have tried to strip away another layer of the characters,” showrunner Kevin Wade told TV Insider in August, adding that the procedural nature of the show means “the only changes we can make are in the characters and their actual fears.”
“I’m trying to write the best stories to put two or more Reagans in opposition to each other and try to resolve it at the end,” Wade continued. “And hopefully, in the resolution, they reveal something new about themselves.”
The newly announced retrospective of the show will continue to make the final season memorable, helping fans reflect on the most important moments from all 293 episodes. BLUE BLOODS: CELEBRATING A FAMILY LEGACY will include new interviews from core cast members along with beloved recurring guests. The special will also include a sneak peek at the final episode. The special will be available starting on Nov. 29.
