The Blue Bloods series finale is almost here, and though both the fans and the stars of the show have been very vocal about the desire for more, the series will indeed come to an end after 14 seasons. In the preview for the finale, which will air on Friday, December 13, we see the Mayor getting shot and the entire Reagan family looking to bring the person responsible for justice. We also see Eddie (Vanessa Ray) saying “We’ve got an officer down,” and chances are it’s her partner Luis Badillo (Ian Quinlan).
In the penultimate episode, titled “Entitlement” we got to see the Reagans have one more family dinner — but not the last one, probably. After all, the show couldn’t really end without one final Reagan family dinner, could it? Blue Bloods has always been a story about Frank (Tom Selleck), the Police Commissioner of New York, and his family, but above all, it has been a story about people and about how the system is better off when the people who do the work day in and day out actually care.
That seems to be the way the show is looking to go out, not with a bang, but with a slice-of-life episode that reminds us that, even though the show will end, life will continue for the Reagans. Sure, the shooting of the Mayor and the possible loss of Eddie’s partner are big things, but they are no bigger than a lot of the other cases that this show and this family have dealt with. That’s the point. There are many other shocking ways the show could have ended.
Someone from the family could have gotten hurt. There could have been a really bad cliffhanger that at least left us concerned about one of them going into the finale. Frank could have contemplated retirement or actually retired. Someone could have left New York. The Regan family unit could have been disrupted more permanently. If there was a time to do it, after all, it was this one. The show wouldn’t have had to deal with it, after all. It’s done.
Instead, the preview for the last episode of Blue Bloods Season 14 promises that the finale will show us the Reagans doing what they do: Solving a case, and then coming together. And perhaps, after all is said and done, they will sit down to dinner, like they’ve done for 14 seasons. Frank will maybe say something profound, or maybe he won’t. That’s not even a prerequisite. Because it’ll be just another day, even if it’s a sad one. It won’t truly be an ending. We can pick back up with these characters at any time.
And perhaps that’s the point. There’s been talk of a possible Blue Bloods spinoff. Tom Selleck has indicated he’d be in if they asked, and if the show really ends the way it seems like it will, bringing him and the rest of the Reagans back would be really easy, even if the spinoff focuses on other characters. Some shows, like Blue Bloods, feel like they never really end. And perhaps, that’s okay. Maybe that’s the only way we can ever say goodbye to them.
