The character still has something to prove in the field.
One Chicago is going big with its upcoming crossover event. As they should! The franchise hasn’t had a proper crossover since 2019, and the fans have been itching to see an instance in which all three teams are brought together to combat a Windy City crisis.
The premise for the crossover, a high-rise fire that cause chaos above as well as below, is a perfect situation drop firefighters, medics and cops in. There’s going to be close calls, and the synopsis for the crossover went as far as to tease that two main characters will be put at risk.
Kidd still wants to prove herself as lieutenant
It’s unclear whether Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) is going to be one of the two, but regardless, the One Chicago crossover is going to be an important storyline for the character. Kidd has spent most of Chicago Fire season 13 playing a background role to the subplots and drama of others.
The plots in which she is directly involved, like the firing of Jack Damon (Michael Bradway), still feel like they are focused primarily on her husband, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). Kidd just hasn’t been given a lot to do. The actress who plays Kidd, however, spoke about the character’s motivation in season 13, and it seems as though a three-part event would be the perfect time to explore it.
Miranda Rae Mayo told Soups.com that Kidd still has a bit of a chip on her shoulder when it comes to her leadership skills. She still feels the need to prove herself as a worthy lieutenant, and this is quietly driving a lot of her actions in the field.
The character wants to make Boden proud
“I think there is a part of herself that really wants to kind of validate Boden’s belief in her,” Mayo told the outlet. “Wants to validate her belief in herself and prove to herself that she can be a good leader.” The actress also alluded to the fact that Kidd is still a relative newcomer to the job. She may be good at it, but she’s still learning. “She hasn’t been a truck Lieutenant for that long,” Mayo added.
A citywide threat would be a prime opportunity for Stella Kidd to realize her full potential as a leader, and make Boden proud. It would also help to rectify an issue we previously alluded to, which is that most of Kidd’s subplots have been predicated on Severide.
Seeing the character get a story of her own, and one that develops her further, would go a long way in making this upcoming crossover a classic. One Chicago will air its sprawling three-part event January 29 on NBC.
