Tom Selleck is targeting major action roles in 2025 as he lines up a comeback post-Blue Bloods, and a source says he’s working hard to get his body back in shape following some tough physical setbacks in recent years.
“Tom meant it when he said he wants to get on a horse, he doesn’t think that’s too much to hope for at all,” a source exclusively tells Closer. “The issue is that he’s had some mobility issues, as everyone knows, but he’s working really hard to tackle that.”
Blue Bloods concluded its 14-season run with its final episode on December 13, 2024. The series, which aired on CBS from 2010 to 2024, starred Tom, 79, as the patriarch of a law enforcement family. Dominating Friday night ratings, the show boasted a stellar cast, including Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray, and Len Cariou.
The finale earned a record number of viewers, clocking in a season-high of 6.68 million viewers in Live+Same Day ratings, per VideoAmp data. Additionally, this was up 15 percent over the season-to-date Live+Same Day viewership average.
Following the conclusion of the long-running series, Tom doesn’t plan on slowing down his acting career and has his eyes on new opportunities.
“He’s lifting weights and practicing Tai Chi to improve his balance and doing physiotherapy. He’s also really watching everything he eats so he can shed some weight, which will make everything easier,” the insider explains. “He and his wife love to take long walks around their farm every night after dinner, which is great and he’s been swimming as well, he’s really coming at this from every angle.”
The source says that with Tom’s 80th birthday approaching, he’s “very motivated” to get in his best physical shape and feels his career is far from over.
“He has a lot more he wants to accomplish,” the insider continues. “At the top of his list is getting something in one of Taylor Sheridan’s shows, like Yellowstone, he’s pushing hard for that and that’s giving him the push he needs to stick to his diet and workouts.”
One day after the finale aired, Tom assured his loyal fans that his acting career was nowhere from slowing down despite the physical changes his body experienced over the years.
“I’m grateful to say, and the writers continued to see the evolution in the characters and let them grow and change,” he told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published on December 14, 2024, adding, “Fifteen years is a long time, and you change physically, you change every other way. You’re just older. At a certain point, all those things entered into what I’ll put in my little actor’s handbook and use, because I certainly don’t intend to stop working.”
A separate source exclusively told Closer on December 25, 2024, that showrunners often made adjustments to the Blue Bloods set as Tom has suffered “orthopedic issues” over the years. “The workaround for that was the show’s signature dinner table scenes, which allowed Tom to do long takes and have big acting moments without being on his feet four hours out of the day,” the insider explained. “That approach will extend to whatever Tom does next — CBS is happy to custom-build a show around Tom’s needs.”
