‘Rookie’ Showrunner Officially Confirms Length of Season 7’s Surprise Time Jump

The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley explains exactly where the series’ seventh season picks up.

Speaking to TVLine, Hawley was asked about the time-jump that is about to take place with the release of Season 7 of The Rookie. “It’s been a few weeks,” Hawley responded, “time enough for Nolan to heal up [from being shot in the butt] – though whether he’s healed up enough or not is a bit of a debate in Episode 1. He’s trying to get back on that horse more quickly than he should.”

Regarding the state in which audiences will find star Nathan Fillion’s Officer John Nolan, Hawley explained, “He’s feeling very pressured, because [Bailey’s escaped convict ex-husband] Jason is out there, as is Oscar, but Jason is more of the existential threat to Nolan’s family.” Hawley added, “We come in with that sense of, ‘We have to catch this guy before he comes for my wife and myself,’ only to — spoiler! — get thwarted by the fact that they have bad information.”

The Rookie premiered on ABC in 2018 to resounding applause from critics and audiences alike. The series focuses on the life and exploits of Fillion’s John Nolan, a retired contractor who decides to embark upon a career as a police officer relatively late in life compared to his fellow rookies. The Rookie also stars Alyssa Diaz as LAPD Detective Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Shawn Ashmore as defense attorney Wesley Evers, Melissa O’Neil as Officer Lucy Chen, and Eric Winter as Officer Tim Bradford, the latter two of whom have become a fan-favorite romantic pairing on the series.

What Is Next for Chenford in Season 7?

Hawley recently discussed where the upcoming seventh season will find Chen and Bradford, the two of whom broke up on a particularly dour note in Season 6. Hawley noted that, at some point in Season Seven, Bradford will be involved in “A scene where he’s at a veterans support group, so he’s still trying to do the work on himself. And look, the good news is that he understands what he did wrong.” Hawley continued, “The worst thing he could possibly think to do to himself was to break up with Lucy, and he’s going to figure that fully out, and then also deal with the repercussions of that.”
