Everybody Loves Raymond: 10 Best Marie Episodes, Ranked

Everybody Loves Raymond’s Marie is overbearing, petty, manipulative, and hilarious. Here are the 10 best Marie episodes on the show.

No one wants a mother-in-law like Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. She’s overbearing, judgmental, and hard to please. While she loves her family and will do anything for them, she’s hard to live with. However, it is impossible to imagine the show without her.

Played by Doris Roberts, Marie is the quintessential overbearing sitcom mother. She cooks, cleans, and takes care of her family. She’s protective, especially of Raymond (Ray Romano). She criticizes Debra (Patricia Heaton) and often fights with her husband, Frank (Peter Boyle). Throughout the show’s nine seasons, Marie is the highlight of many episodes. Take a look at Marie’s most memorable episodes.

Going On A Cruise With Marie

Sometimes, Marie just likes to have fun. In the season three episode “Cruising with Marie,” Frank fakes an injury to avoid going on a romantic cruise with Marie. Not wanting to miss the cruise, she decides to invite Ray to join her.

Of course, Ray doesn’t want to go on a cruise with his mother, but he always has a hard time saying no to Marie. While on the cruise, Ray notices how differently his mother is behaving. She’s making friends and is a “party girl.” It’s a different side of Marie that viewers (and Ray) don’t get to see.

Debra Calls Marie “Mom”

Debra has a complicated relationship with Marie. Marie loves to criticize Debra’s cooking, cleaning, and how she raises her children. Viewers feel bad for Debra, who does a good job putting up with this behavior.

In the season six episode “Call Me Mom,” Debra tells Ray to start calling her mother “mom,” which Marie doesn’t like. He wants Debra to return the favor and call Marie “mom.” This is difficult for Debra, but when she finally says it, Marie surprises her by telling her that she doesn’t have to call her “mom.” It leads to an emotional moment between the two.

The Toaster

Marie doesn’t like disappointing her children. In the season three Christmas episode “The Toaster,” Ray and Debra give Frank and Marie a personally engraved toaster with a sweet message. Frank and Marie didn’t care for the toaster and traded it in for a coffee maker. Of course, they didn’t know it was engraved.

Marie wants to make things right with Ray and Debra, so she and Frank rush to a department store to find the original toaster. This leads to comical moments between the bickering couple. When Frank tells her to be quiet, Marie famously responds, “Don’t you tell me to be quiet! I have a mind of my own, you know. I can contribute. I’m not just some trophy wife!”

Reading Ray’s Journal

In the season five episode “Ray’s Journal,” Ray is surprised to find out that Marie read his journal when he was in high school. He wrote about some embarrassing situations, but he invented his own unique code so people couldn’t read his journal. However, Marie cracked the code.

When Ray was upset with his mother, he wrote, “I hate my mom.” When Marie admits that she knew he hated her all along, it’s heartbreaking. A mother doesn’t want to read that her son hates her. The scene won Roberts an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Reckless Driving

In the season five episode “The Wallpaper,” Marie accidentally drives Frank’s car into Ray and Debra’s house. No one is injured, thankfully, but it’s an unforgettable moment of the show.

This accident causes damage to the house, forcing Ray and Debra to make repairs. While this episode doesn’t focus entirely on Marie, she causes this major event. It was a shocking, yet hilarious, moment that makes viewers laugh every time. It seems Marie needs to work on her driving skills.

Marie’s Risqué Sculpture

Marie is known for being an old-fashioned mother. However, in the season six episode “Marie’s Sculpture,” she finds herself in a rather risqué situation. She enrolled in an art class and made an abstract sculpture that looks like a vagina. While that wasn’t her intention, it made the whole family uncomfortable.

Marie even donates the sculpture to a church auction. No one knows how to tell her what the sculpture resembles, which results in nervous, yet hilarious, moments in the episode. Marie tried her best to be creative, but it didn’t work out for her.

Marie Gets Glasses
