Tom Selleck celebrates his 80th birthday surrounded by love and exciting plans for the future

Tom Selleck may have been shell shocked over the end of his beloved show Blue Bloods, but he’s counting his blessings instead of griping as he prepares to turn 80 on January 29 with his family and friends helping to celebrate the milestone occasion.

“He’s seen and lived through a lot, and he feels rather fortunate to be here to talk about it,” a source exclusively tells Closer. “Sure, he wasn’t happy with Blue Bloods getting canceled, but he wants to focus on the positive and ring in 80 with smiles and laughter and not dwell on the negative stuff.”

The insider continues, “His wife and daughter are planning a big celebration at the farm with friends over to celebrate Tom and toast to his health and maybe roast him a little, too, all in good fun. No doubt, some people from the show will be invited, like Donnie [Wahlberg] and Bridget [Moynahan], which Tom will like very much. They’re all like family to him.”

Tom and the rest of the cast said their final goodbyes to Blue Bloods on December 13, 2024, after 14 years on air. Since then, the former Magnum P.I. star has opened up about adjusting to life after spending so many years playing the role of Frank Reagan.

“The hardest part for me is we had the Blue Bloods family and we had the actors’ family,” Tom told Parade in an interview published days before the series finale on December 6, 2024. “They’re all my pals. I miss them. It’s going to take a lot of getting used to.”

The Three Men and a Baby actor also spoke out the day after the finale aired and discussed how “grateful” he was to have been a part of the series.

“I’m grateful to say, and the writers continued to see the evolution in the characters and let them grow and change,” Tom said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly on December 14, 2024. “Fifteen years is a long time, and you change physically, you change every other way. You’re just older. At a certain point, all those things entered into what I’ll put in my little actor’s handbook and use, because I certainly don’t intend to stop working.”

However, the Quigley Down Under star couldn’t hide his disappointment with the show’s cancellation.

“My biggest goal is to make sure people realize we went out in rather spectacular success,” Tom continued. “It wasn’t tired, it wasn’t anything else. Somebody may be able to tell me someday why CBS wanted to end it, but I haven’t had a good answer yet.”

Regardless of Blue Bloods getting the axe, Tom still plans to take on more TV and/or film roles in the future. A source previously told Closer that he’s now more motivated than ever to get back in shape.

“Tom meant it when he said he wants to get on a horse, he doesn’t think that’s too much to hope for at all,” the insider said earlier this month. “The issue is that he’s had some mobility issues, as everyone knows, but he’s working really hard to tackle that.”

The source added, “He’s lifting weights and practicing Tai Chi to improve his balance and doing physiotherapy. He’s also really watching everything he eats so he can shed some weight, which will make everything easier. He and his wife love to take long walks around their farm every night after dinner, which is great and he’s been swimming as well, he’s really coming at this from every angle.”
