Station 19' Series Finale Wish List: Here's What Needs to Happen

These two stars really don’t want Station 19 to end, so much so that they’ve suggested ABC create a spinoff featuring their characters. Will there be a Maya and Carina Station 19 spinoff? Keep reading to find out more.

Station 19 is a spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy that follows firefighters’ personal and professional lives at the Seattle Fire Department’s fictional Station 19, from the captain to the newest recruit. The main character is Andrea “Andy” Herrera, the newly appointed captain of Station 19 and the stubborn daughter of the late Captain Pruitt Herrera. Executive-produced by Shonda Rhimes, the series premiered in 2018 and is currently in its seventh and final season.

Station 19 Season 6 Episode 14 Major Twists Explained

As Station 19 inches toward its series finale, two of the show’s actors want to continue the franchise with a spinoff of their own. Fan-favorite couple Carina (played by Stefania Spampinato) and Maya (played by Danielle Savre), known by their ship name “Marina,” are a highlight of the series. Although the couple almost called it quits in Season 6, they began building their family after adopting an orphan baby, Liam, in Season 7.

When asked at the wrap party by TV Insider what they would like to see as Marina’s legacy, Spampinato suggested a spinoff about the pair, who want to grow their family.

“I agree with spinoff. It’s been nice,” Savre agreed with her co-star. “[Marina] lives on with the fans if it doesn’t live on with us. I’m excited to see – some of the fan fiction has been pretty dead on.” Spampinato added, “It feels like our finale could have been inspired by some fan fiction.”

In the series, Maya and Carina dream of expanding their family. Carina wants to carry a baby to term, but in the April 11 episode, viewers learned that her eggs are no longer viable. Instead, they’ll need to implant one of Maya’s eggs inside of Carina, but the process will not be easy for the couple. Savre told the site that their pregnancy journey and Maya’s family issues will make for a dramatic back half of the season.

“Even though there are only five episodes left, they are going to be a real roller coaster of emotions,” she teased. “I’m trying not to spoil anything, but it’s definitely going to be a roller coaster. Regardless of what the end is, we are going to take you on a ride in five episodes.”

Spampinato added that the couple has what it takes to throw anything that comes their way. “Carina started very spicy. Her journey was to settle into a family dynamic that wasn’t toxic, or even if it sometimes reminded her of her home, they were able to go through it and go to therapy,” she said. “They are working and talking and solving all the issues.”

While a spinoff featuring Marina would please fans, it’s unknown whether ABC has the capacity and budget to take on a new Station 19 series at this time, considering why the network is ending Station 19 in the first place. “It came down to ABC wanting to save money in a push for an economical schedule balancing scripted fare with reality and live sports,” sources told Deadline of Station 19’s cancelation.

We’ll update you as we learn more about Station 19’s future and a potential spinoff featuring Marina.
