A Cast Member of ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ Who Never Quite Felt Comfortable Around Don Knotts

The cast of The Andy Griffith Show was known for its tight-knit, family-like atmosphere. The beloved series, which ran for eight seasons, featured Andy Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, Don Knotts as his bumbling Deputy Barney Fife, Ron Howard as Opie Taylor, and Frances Bavier as Aunt Bee, among others.

How Don Knotts Joined the Cast

Knotts and Griffith’s friendship began during their time together in the 1955 Broadway production No Time for Sergeants. After years apart, Knotts saw Griffith on television in 1960 while watching The Danny Thomas Show, which featured the pilot for The Andy Griffith Show. Inspired, Knotts reached out to Griffith, expressing his interest in joining the cast, suggesting, “Don’t you think Sheriff Andy Taylor ought to have a Deputy?”

Aneta Corsaut’s Unease Around Knotts

Despite the camaraderie among the cast, Aneta Corsaut, who played Griffith’s love interest Helen Crump, never felt entirely at ease around Knotts. According to Daniel de Visé, Knotts’ brother-in-law and author of Andy and Don: The Making of a Friendship and a Classic American TV Show, Corsaut admired Knotts’ work but felt a sense of competition for Griffith’s attention.

Corsaut’s relationship with Griffith was notably complex; they shared a romantic connection off-screen, which may have contributed to her discomfort around Knotts. De Visé noted that while the bond between Griffith and Knotts was deep, the dynamics left Corsaut feeling somewhat excluded.

Knotts left the show after its fifth season to focus on his film career, while Corsaut remained until the series concluded in its eighth season. She passed away in 1995, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the classic series.
