A ‘Game of Thrones’ Star’s 54% Rotten Tomatoes Romance Is a Streaming Hit Nearly a Decade Later

British actress Emilia Clarke, best known as Daenerys Targaryen in the beloved Game of Thrones, has been part of many exciting projects since her on-screen career began back in 2009. From joining the MCU in Secret Invasion to starring in one of the sleeper hits of the modern holiday season, Last Christmas, Clarke’s filmography might be relatively small, but it is packed with eye-catching performances.

Among these is the romantic drama Me Before You, which sees Clarke star as Lou Clark alongside The Count of Monte Cristo‘s Sam Claflin as Will Traynor, in a tale that explores the boundaries of love against life’s most difficult circumstances. Directed by Wicked Little Letters‘ Thea Sharrock, and written by Jojo Moyes, based on her own 2012 novel of the same name, Me Before You was an undeniable hit upon its initial release back in 2016, earning an impressive 73% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, despite falling short to a mixed 54% critics’ score.

Now, almost 10 years later, Me Before You is proving popular on Prime Video, making waves across the world on the streamer. For the past few days, Me Before You has been fluctuating within Prime Video’s top 10 in a plethora of countries worldwide, including Argentina, Egypt, Mexico, and others. Not quite hitting the top spot in any country, the film has peaked most recently in Guatemala, where it finished 3rd on both July 4 and July 6. On July 5, the movie found its highest average ranking across all its top 10 placements, with a 5.4 score from 13 countries.

Was ‘Me Before You’ a Box Office Hit?

In 2016, there were many high-profile titles dominating theaters across the world, from Disney’s Moana to the first Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One, and more. Despite this strong competition, Me Before You was a huge success at the box office, turning a reported budget of $20 million and returning 10.4 times this investment, with a global total of $208.4 million. Split between a domestic haul of $56.2 million and a further $152.2 million from overseas markets, Me Before You finished the year as the 42nd highest-grossing movie, even outperforming the likes of Bridget Jones’s Baby, the revolutionary sci-fi flick Arrival, and the big-budget adaptation of The BFG.

Me Before You is streaming now on Prime Video. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the latest streaming titles.
