In a quirky conclusion to the season 19 auditions of America’s Got Talent, judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofía Vergara, and Howie Mandel joined the live audience in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record on NBC. The episode featured Nick Manning from Queensland, Australia, who aimed to surpass the record for the “most underpants pulled on in 30 seconds.” Unfortunately, despite the excitement, Nick fell short of the existing record of 23.
As show host Terry Crews addressed the audience, he offered a lighthearted twist: “Sorry, Nick, you did not beat the world record. But we have a chance to go for another world record right now.” This led to a new challenge for the audience—to set the record for the most people gathered in one place wearing underwear on their heads.
Heidi and Sofía enthusiastically participated, while Simon initially hesitated. However, he was soon persuaded by the chanting audience to join in after being reassured that the underwear was new and clean. As the hit Rod Stewart song “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” played, the audience danced with underwear on their heads, creating a lively atmosphere.
The official adjudicator from Guinness, named Michael, announced that the previous record of 355 people was shattered, with a staggering 1,206 participants donning underwear on their heads. While the audience and judges celebrated this unusual achievement, Nick’s earlier attempt at a record didn’t translate into success during his judging segment. Sofia remarked that she wasn’t particularly fascinated by world record attempts, and Simon noted Nick’s failure, questioning the difficulty of the new challenge.
Despite the judges’ playful banter, Nick received four “no” votes and exited the stage. “My God, what’s happened to this show?” Simon quipped, still sporting the underwear atop his head.
The two-hour episode did not feature any Golden Buzzer moments, as those had already been awarded to previous contestants. However, several standout performances shone through, including 19-year-old Brooke Bailey from Los Angeles, who impressed the judges with her rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way,” earning four yes votes.
Other notable acts included the Xpogo stunt team, who showcased impressive tricks, and Corky Miller, a 63-year-old animal trainer who delivered a well-received stand-up routine. The episode also highlighted the talents of the Prilepin Quartet from Russia, who captivated the judges with their acrobatics, as well as Black Peppers from Japan, who combined gymnastics with comedy.
As the episode wrapped up, Terry announced an exciting new feature: a “live” Golden Buzzer to be introduced in the upcoming season. With NBC gearing up for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, regular programming has been adjusted, but fans can look forward to more unique performances and unexpected moments when the show returns.
