Blue Bloods hasn’t been the same this season, following the shock departure of Amy Carlson and the abrupt death of her beloved character Linda Reagan. Many fans were distraught by the way Linda was written out of the show, and in a new interview with Deadline, Carlson revealed that she had some mixed feelings about it herself.

“I feel badly that she dies the way she dies,” Carlson said, referring to Linda’s off-screen death in a helicopter crash. “I did not know they would do that, I was surprised. I wouldn’t have done that.” Asked how she would have preferred Linda to be written off, she said “I could’ve shown the death. I guess It would’ve been nice for the fans to see her demise, to be a participant in it, and that was my vote for the fans.” She added that since her departure from the show, many fans have told her that they wish there had been more time to mourn the character.

So, would she ever consider returning for a flashback? “Yeah, I think it’s been hard on the fans,” Carlon said. “I never wanted it to end that way, so I feel sad for the fans because everyone wants closure, and I hear that a lot from the fans. So of course I’d be open to that. Sure.”

During a panel last month, the rest of the show’s cast opened up about their “grief” and “disappointment” over Carlson’s departure. “I know the audience is grieving her loss too, a lot, and I think if everyone rides the season out and takes that journey with the family as well, they will go through those stages of grief together and do what Blue Bloods typically does: make us all one family,” said series star Donnie Wahlberg.
