TV fans know it best: Nothing gold can stay. So with that metaphor in mind, how might Chicago Med be approaching Hannah’s pregnancy this Fall TV season in light of Fire’s recent pregnancy twist?
The #OneChicago lineup returned last week, delivering shocking Fire news: After finding out she was pregnant in the Season 13 finale, we learned that Stella has since suffered a miscarriage. But there’s still hope for a #OneChicago baby; Stella wasn’t the only franchise character entering this season with a new pregnancy.
Chicago Med Season 10 wrapped on a similar note: Hannah was pregnant and getting ready to share her news with the baby’s father — whose identity remained a mystery to viewers. It was revealed in the Season 11 premiere that the baby’s dad is Archer, not her ex Ripley, as many had assumed.
Because of the obvious similarities between the Fire and Med storylines, I can’t help but wonder if #Stellaride’s loss will reverberate across the Dick Wolf Universe in unexpected ways.
When TVLine spoke with Allen MacDonald for our Fall TV Preview, he shared some stealth teases about what’s to come for Archer and Hannah in the baby department. When I asked him whether or not Hannah’s pregnancy will be a major Season 11 storyline, MacDonald gave an oddly coy answer.
“I was on the fence about answering that question,” he said. “But yes, I think that you can count on that storyline going on for a while.”
I initially asked the question because I wondered how much time might have passed by the time Season 11 picked up. Would Hannah be late in her pregnancy? Would she have the baby at some point in the new season? Would she already have given birth? But after MacDonald’s cautious answer, I worried his hesitation indicated something more ominous. I pushed him on why he was so wary to share that innocuous little tidbit with me.
“Well, sometimes pregnancy news changes,” he said. “I mean, you’ll notice I didn’t say they’re gonna have the baby, but I said it’s gonna be a storyline for awhile.”
Pregnancy news changes?! Is MacDonald suggesting that Hannah will lose the pregnancy, either by termination or miscarriage? Or, might it have been a false positive test result all along? (I’d hope, that as medical professionals, Archer and Hannah would’ve already ruled this option out, but who’s to say?!)
And it would make sense, wouldn’t it? For Hannah to lose the pregnancy? The possibility of a future Med baby does present plenty of obstacles: Will Hannah exit the show as she takes maternity leave? Will Archer’s 65-year-old body be able to keep up with the demands of parenting? (I mean, the man did just collapse during a long surgery!) Will he have to retire just to keep up with his ferocious little newborn? Will our entire Gaffney team fall apart in their absence?! It almost feels like Hannah has to lose the pregnancy for the show to carry on, doesn’t it?
