Behind the Scenes of Ghosts: Writer Talia Bernstein Explains the Creative Process

As we eagerly await the launch of Season 4 of Ghosts, insights about the hit comedy are always welcome. At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Collider spoke with Talia Bernstein, a talented screenwriter promoting her new film, Loser Baby, which marks Dakota Johnson’s directorial debut. During the interview, Bernstein shared how an episode of Ghosts comes to life.

Led by showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the writing team follows a familiar process, but hearing an insider’s perspective adds depth. Bernstein emphasized the importance of a writers’ room, explaining, “We start with an idea for an episode, and if it resonates and we enjoy pitching scenes, a group might dive deeper into developing it. Once fleshed out, it’s assigned to someone to guide it through the next steps. They write the script, it gets reviewed, edited, and eventually shot.”

Learning from How I Met Your Mother

Bernstein also reflected on her experience with How I Met Your Mother, particularly during its much-discussed ninth season, where she served as an assistant. She noted that being part of such a beloved show was a valuable learning experience, saying, “It was fun working on a show I loved and it taught me a lot about the industry.”

This foundation paved the way for her role in Ghosts, a show she has been part of since its inception. “It’s amazing to see it in its fourth season,” she said. “We shoot in Montreal, and it’s a delight to work on.” Season 4 promises significant changes for both characters and viewers, as Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) will finally gain the ability to see the ghosts of Woodstone Mansion. Fans will have to tune in to discover how this unfolds when the new season premieres.
