Beth & Rip’s Yellowstone Spinoff Expands Cast With 4-Time Oscar Nominee

Beth and Rip’s upcoming Yellowstone spinoff, The Dutton Ranch, expands its cast with a four-time Oscar nominee joining the series’ returning stars. The Dutton Ranch spinoff takes place after the original series, focusing on Beth and Rip living on their new ranch while raising Carter. The show will include new characters as well, such as Annette Bening’s rancher Beulah Jackson.

Now, Variety has confirmed Ed Harris is joining The Dutton Ranch, portraying a character named Everett McKinney in the Yellowstone spinoff. The four-time Oscar nominee’s character is described as a good-humored veterinarian, as well as a veteran. It’s unclear what his larger role in the story set to unfold is going to be, other than involvement with Beth and Rip.

What Ed Harris Joining The Dutton Ranch Means For The Yellowstone Spinoff

Ed Harris as The Man in Black in Westworld season 4

Harris is most recently known for his role as the Man in Black on the cast of Westworld, and will portray Neal Saroyan in the upcoming Wonder Man TV show. However, he’s also been nominated for Oscars for Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock and The Hours, later earning other awards and nominations for his various movie and TV show roles.

Harris is no stranger to westerns, either, having co-written, directed, and starred in 2008’s Appaloosa, which appeared on some Top 10 lists for best movies of the year. His role as Everett doesn’t denote him as a gunslinger, and it’s unclear how he’ll cross paths with Beth and Rip. However, as a veterinarian, he might maintain animals on the ranch.

With the end of Yellowstone leaving Beth and Rip in the perfect place for a fresh start, it makes sense new faces like Harris’ Everett will become important to the story. But their spinoff is just one of two continuing the story of the main series after the end: Y: Marshals, following Kayce Dutton, will air on CBS in 2026.

Our Take On Ed Harris’ Casting For The Dutton Ranch

Beth and Rip in Yellowstone

Harris joining The Dutton Ranch perfectly rounds out the cast with a character who will seemingly be important for maintaining the core couple’s ranch. It helps that the actor’s decades-long career will make him a very memorable presence onscreen, offering plenty of advice or unique perspectives to whatever issues arise for Beth and Rip.

While it’s unclear just how involved he’ll be in their lives, the Yellowstone spinoff is poised to be a new beginning that still feels familiar to the elements of the main series. With so many plans ahead for the franchise, Harris’ involvement is an exciting attribute that will no doubt strengthen The Dutton Ranch as the family’s next chapter unfolds.
