His real-life persona is a lot different than his ‘Big Bang Theory’ character.
While he’s best known as the scientist with a speech impediment Barry Kripke on The Big Bang Theory (otherwise known as Sheldon’s biggest nemesis), actor John Ross Bowie is more than just a sitcom star. The 54-year-old is also a punk rock singer, and fans are hugely supportive of his musical pursuits, as a recent social media post proved.
Bowie took to Instagram this week to share a video announcing an upcoming punk rock-related event, wearing t-shirt with the logo for the band The Dickies as he addressed the camera.
“Hey, I’m John Ross Bowie from The Big Bang Theory, Speechless and the punk band Egghead…I bet you’ve heard of one of those things,” he quipped.
“I have the extreme honor of leading a guided tour of the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas on October 25,” Bowie continued, adding, “And I’m gonna stick around later in the evening and DJ at the Three Star Punk Bar. Come by! Oct 25, Las Vegas, the Punk Rock Musuem. What else are you doing?”
In his caption, Bowie explained that proceeds from the event will go to a charity called “I’m young and empowered.”
Fans in the comments were thrilled to hear about the upcoming gig, with one writing, “YES!!! FINALLY!”
“This is awesome John! I’ll definitely be there if I’m in town!” agreed a second commenter, with another chiming in to say, “So sick!”
How has punk rock influenced John Ross Bowie’s career?
Bowie’s passion for punk rock has served as inspiration for his work as a playwright. In 2019, he chatted with Theatermania about how The Ramones and their notorious conflict with producer Phil Spector gave him the idea for his first play, Four Chords and a Gun.
“I’ve been a Ramones fan since I was 14, and as I delved into the stories behind them, I found them a group full of contradictions,” he explained.
“They dress like tough guys but only Johnny was an authentic tough guy,” Bowie continued, adding, “There was something aggressive but also sweet about their music. And then, there was a really interesting dynamic about the band recording their fifth album, which is the one they did with Phil Spector. Here was a band that was used to working fast and cheap, keeping it really punk rock and banging it out in a week for a couple of grand, and suddenly, they were working with this guy who was famously meticulous and precise.”
In addition to being a playwright, Bowie has also written a memoir, titled No Job For A Man, which was published in 2022, and a book about the movie Heathers.
