Brian left the show in 2022 and has since returned to Chicago Med to direct two of its episodes

The actor said he could see Dr. Choi returning to the NBC drama in a case where the hospital was in trouble and was on the brink of trajedy

Since his departure, the actor has returned to the NBC drama to direct two episodes.

In terms of his character, Brian recently teased fans could see more from Dr. Choi in the future during an interview at the Gotham TV Awards.

“There’s always conversation [about] returning on screen,” the actor told TVLine.

“It’s interesting. I think, every season, Chicago Med goes through a bit of a flux.

“But I get to come back, and I play with all the cast and the crew on the director side of things.

“So we’ll always start that conversation, and if the right time or the right storyline comes along, maybe it might happen.

“So it’s kind of one of those things that you never say goodbye to,” he teased.

THINKING OUT LOUD

Brian also had an idea of what kind of scenario his character might encounter if he were to return.

“I think probably the hospital needs help. Some kind of tragedy is about to happen, some kind of major catastrophe drama,” Brian guessed.

“Maybe they bring back myself and Will Halstead and April and bring back some of the old crew to kind of fix things to what it was.”

With some experience under his belt, Brian also said that he would be interested in expanding his directing resume to other series in the Chicago franchise.

“That would be my next thing. It’s not quite on the docket yet. I mean, it’s on the docket for me, hopefully. So we’ll see,” he explained.

“Everyone there, as far as P.D. and Fire, are doing incredible work. And I know it’s a lot harder to shoot because they shoot outside.

“Us on Chicago Med get to be indoors most of the time. So that will be much more of an adventure as far as my directing is concerned,” he continued.

GOODBYE, DR. CHOI

Brian left Chicago Med in December 2022, during an episode titled Could Be The Start Of Something New.

The actor’s decision to leave came after his six-year contract with the show was up.

At the time, Deadline reported that the Jurassic World actor wanted to spend more time with his family.

Brian is married to actress Mirelly Taylor and the two welcomed their daughter, Madeline, in 2015.

He was also planning to “pursue other opportunities expanding on his experience as an actor, a budding director, and producer.”

So it’s kind of one of those things that you never say goodbye to.”

Brian explained the importance of playing Dr. Ethan Choi in the series and showed gratitude for the opportunity.

“Playing Dr. Ethan Choi on Chicago Med has been such a gift and a blessing,” he told the outlet.

“I am forever grateful to our fans and my colleagues both in front of and behind the camera as I embark on a new journey.”

Brian said that playing a protagonist role like Ethan “catapulted me into a different arena, one where I feel the perception of not only myself but Asian Americans had been changed.”

“Just having an Asian face as a leading man was a stepping stone if not the ladder,” he added.

While Brian returned to Chicago Med to direct a few episodes following his departure, he has also been involved in other projects.

The actor stars opposite Nicole Kidman in the Amazon series Expats, which is set in Hong Kong.

Brian plays Clarke Woo, who attempts to keep his family together after his young son, Gus, disappears.

The six-episode miniseries was released on the streaming platform in January 2024.
