Donnie Wahlberg shared his excitement for portraying Danny Reagan in the upcoming Blue Bloods offshoot, Boston Blue.
“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue!” Donnie captioned a Tuesday, March 25, teaser trailer posted on his Instagram account. “The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!”
An official premiere date has not been set for Boston Blue, but fans can look forward to the series hitting the TV lineup in the fall. The show will follow Donnie’s Blue Bloods character, Danny, as he takes a job with Boston PD.
His character will be paired with a new face, Detective Lena Peters, who was described as the “eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
There’s still been no word on if the new show will incorporate some familiar faces from Blue Bloods. However, many are holding out hope to see Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan make an appearance on Boston Blue. Sources told Closer that the TV icon is open to the idea of reprising his role on the new show.
“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” an insider told Closer in February. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

The source said that despite Blue Bloods ending, Tom, 80, and Donnie, 55, have a great relationship outside of the show and still keep in touch.
“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the insider shared. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”
“They both got emotional filming their last dinner scene on Blue Bloods because it was the last, but now that this series is happening, they may get to do another,” they continued. “It’s set in Boston so it won’t be a regular family dinner thing like on the last show but there’s the potential and Tom would be all for doing it.”
Prior to the Blue Bloods series finale airing in December 2024, Donnie said that filming the show’s final family dinner scene was a sentimental time he’ll never forget.
“I think when we finished filming is what I’ll remember most,” the New Kids on the Block crooner told Entertainment Weekly in December 2024. “We all just kind of sat there for a long time, and I think everyone was hesitating to say something to say goodbye because A, nobody wanted to, and B, everyone knew once somebody starts talking, it’s a wrap.”
“The tissues are coming out and everyone’s going to start crying, and sure enough they did. I remember Tom read a poem — or, he didn’t read it,” he added. “He’d memorized the poem and recited it. He’s known the poem for years, and he did that from time to time. He would say a poem or he would quote some old famous saying or something. He would always just drop these sage little things upon us at dinner from time to time.”
