“‘Blue Bloods’ Legacy Continues: CBS Greenlights New Spinoff Series”

Just when Blue Bloods fans were giving up hope on the show’s future, CBS made a major announcement that will bring back a fan-favorite character. While the network confirmed back in June 2024 that “franchise extensions” were in the works, there has been no information about potential spinoffs since—until now.

In a major development, the network is bringing back Donnie Wahlberg to his role as Danny Reagan on an all-new series called Boston Blue. As the title suggests, Danny will be making a major move from New York to Boston in the new series. According to the network, “Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

The new series is described as a “universe expansion” and is set to air in the 2025-2026 broadcast season. Deadline reports that CBS previously considered spinoffs that would’ve had Danny Reagan relocate Texas and another one that focused on Tom Selleck’s character. Boston Blue was originally conceived as a stand-alone series separate from the Blue Bloods universe, but the script was reworked when it was seen to be a natural fit for Boston native Donnie.

No additional details about the series have been released, so fans will be left to wonder if any of the other Blue Bloods characters will cross over to the new series. With the change in location, it seems unlikely that we’ll be treated to a regular Reagan family dinner, but we’ll be happy to see Danny Reagan back in action soon!
