Despite showrunner Kevin Wade initially rejecting the idea of a Blue Bloods reboot, the series is returning in a new city, with Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as Danny Reagan in the new ‘Boston Blue’
‘Blue Bloods’ fans are in for a treat, as the story will be brought back to life in a new city.
The CBS drama aired its final season last year after 14 seasons and 288 episodes. While it’s unclear if Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan, will be making a return, the new series will focus on Danny Reagan, son of Frank played by Donnie Wahlberg.
This comes after the ‘Blue Bloods’ showrunner Kevin Wade initially dismissed the idea of a reboot. However, he now appears to have been wrong, as the new series will be titled ‘Boston Blue,’ CBS announced.
While the original series took place in New York City, Donnie will be reprising his role and taking a position in the Boston Police Department. He will also be collaborating with Detective Lena Peters, who is the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.
Deadline reported there were several potential spinoffs pitched, including one where Danny Reagan moves to Texas. Boston Blue was originally conceived as its own show about a family of police officers in Boston, and CBS ordered a script.
After it was well received by the network, they decided to make it a part of the Blue Bloods universe. The show has been ordered for the 2025-2026 broadcast season, Deadline said.
When the show was originally canceled in 2024, the stars were outspokenly disappointed. Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg both expressed their wish for the show to continue.
Fans of the series have been evidently happy to see the series return in this new light. One user wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Yay!!!!! I’m so happy to see Donnie is back in a TV series. Yippee!!!”
Another question asked: “I am thrilled to have our Danny back, will the Regan family visit Boston?” A third chimed in: “I love adventure and action series and movies and #BloodBlues brought that for me again! So if there’s a spin off with @DonnieWahlberg character I’m for it!”
