Now, CBS has confirmed a Blue Bloods spinoff is in development, currently under the working title Boston Blue. The new show will see the return of Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan as he becomes part of Boston PD. The show is poised to air during the 2025-2026 TV season, meaning the first episodes are expected to arrive later this year. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serve as showrunners and executive producers.
The first official logline reads as follows:
In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.
Ana Dumaraog, ScreenRant‘s Network TV Editor, had this to say in reaction to the news:
Continuing the Blue Bloods universe with Danny’s spinoff poses some questions, including why he’s suddenly moving to Boston and what happened to his budding romance with Baez, as hinted in the finale. However, it’s also the best possible scenario for expanding the procedural franchise. Setting the spinoff in Boston is particularly clever — it isn’t too far from New York, meaning other Raegans can easily appear, but it’s separate enough that Danny’s story can progress without being bogged down by his family’s legacy.
Given the announcement that Wahlberg will be coming back, it doesn’t sound like the other characters in Blue Bloods will be returning as series regulars. This means Danny will be the show’s primary focus, with newcomers like Lena, whose actor is unknown as of writing, orbiting his development over the course of the show. His move to Boston is also something entirely new, and a development the spinoff will need to justify while presenting a new story for his law enforcement work to revolve around.
Sadly, CBS canceled Blue Bloods, meaning its fourteenth season is its last, and hopefully, the show’s replacement won’t also end anytime soon.
The show is the latest in a long line of spinoffs being produced for CBS, including the upcoming Sherriff Country, a spinoff of Fire Country, and an untitled The Equalizer offshoot starring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz. This makes Blue Bloods another TV universe for the network, which is also home to the NCIS and FBI shows. However, this spinoff is different because it also acts as a sequel to the original show, bringing a lead character to a new location for the purpose of continuing his story.
