‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off ‘Boston Blue’ Finally Has a Release Date

Get out your calendars and grab a pencil — if you’re still going the analog route — Boston Blue has officially found its place on CBS’ fall schedule. We officially know that the Blue Bloods off-shoot will arrive at television screens beginning in January, secured in the Friday 10 p.m. time slot. For fans of the original series, the timing will sound eerily familiar. That’s because the show will slide into the same spot that its predecessor used to fill before it was unceremoniously canceled after a successful 14-season run. It’s a decision that has still reverberated throughout the Blue Bloods fanbase, as the show was still going incredible strong after more than a decade on the air. The upcoming spin-off will mark the return of Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan, and that reveal is terrific for fans who have been struggling for their Blue Bloods fix (and hopefully means we’ll see some other familiar faces from the Reagan family return as well).

Along with the schedule reveal, we’ve also gathered some more intel about Boston Blue, with the network revealing that Wahlberg will be starring opposite Star Trek: Discovery alum, Sonequa Martin-Green. Leaving the beautiful city of New York behind him, Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan ships up to Boston where he’s accepted a new job and a brand-new precinct. Now part of the Boston PD, Danny will need to learn the ins and outs alongside his new peers and won’t be a member of the main family involved in politics and policing. Instead, that will fall on Martin-Green’s Lena Peters, the detective assigned to work with Danny and the eldest daughter of Boston’s version of the Reagans.

Will Any Characters from ‘Blue Bloods’ Appear in ‘Boston Blue’?

Since the announcement of the off-shoot, fans have been wondering if any of the characters from the flagship series will end up on Boston Blue. After all, New York City isn’t that far away from Boston and Danny will certainly get homesick at one point or another. While no one has been confirmed, Wahlberg recently teased the possibility, telling Fox,

“Now, it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it — but I could say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never be just Danny. There’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away. And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”
