‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off Gets a Boost From Crime Series Producer Jerry Bruckheimer

Procedural enthusiasts will be eating well over at CBS this fall thanks to the return of titles like Tracker and NCIS, but for fans of the now dead Blue Bloods, there’s something even more important on the docket. Set for an arrival on October 17, Boston Blue will pick up with everyone’s favorite law enforcement family son, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), as he travels from New York to Boston to start anew. While we wait patiently for a debut trailer for the new series, which also stars Sonequa Martin-Green, showrunner Brandon Sonnier painted a picture of how audiences can expect the show to visually compare to its predecessor.

As part of CBS Fall 2025 Virtual Press Day, Sonnier addressed his online audience and teased what was to come. Praising the vision of Anthony Hemingway, who helmed the pilot, Sonnier said, “He brought so much heart and so much warmth and so much style… It truly represents where we’re trying to take the Blue Bloods universe.” And where will the journey eventually end up? The answer to that is somewhere that stays in line with a Jerry Bruckheimer production, as Sonnier explained,

“The evolution that we’re trying to present with this new family and this new city and this same tradition, same faith, same family rooted stories, but with a Bruckheimer style. You know, Jerry Bruckheimer’s producer on this, and we really wanted to evolve into a more Bruckheimer version of the Blue Bloods that we know and love.”

Mixing the old with the new, the showrunner added,

“We do have some of the original Blue Bloods directors that are coming in and gracing us with their presence and then also a stable of directors that we’ve worked with before. We’ve previously worked with the Bruckheimer Company and so it’s really a mixture of the older steady hands from Blue Bloods and sort of a newer infusion of Jerry Bruckheimer stable directors.”

Sonequa Martin-Green Says There’s a Seat for Everyone

One of the most touching and heartfelt parts of the flagship series was the Reagan family dinners. It was a time when Danny and his law enforcement family would gather around the table, sharing their stories, laughter, love, and — of course — large plates of food. So, Martin-Green using the metaphor for this treasured time as a way to invite audiences to join the creative team was incredibly on point, as the actress said:

“We’re taking this legacy Blue Bloods built and we are going to fly with it. And so all the way from CBS to our beloved Brandons [Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis] to the writers, producers, directors, and the phenomenal cast and crew, we invite you to come and sit down at our table. Come and eat dinner with us, come, come solve these crimes with us, cry and laugh with us. Because we owe it to you, we owe it to those law enforcement families, to all watching all around the country in the world. We are very excited to be connected with you, to be extending and expanding this franchise, and we’re gonna be doing it with love and light and fun. So yeah, we got a seat waiting for you.”
