Blue Bloods Spinoff Casts Star Trek Actor As Danny’s Partner

The law enforcement partner to Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) has been cast for Boston Blue. Even though the long-running CBS series Blue Bloods recently ended, the franchise is set to continue with a spinoff focused on Danny. The Blue Bloods spinoff is slated to debut as part of the 2025-2026 television season, where it will build on the legacy of the original show that aired on CBS for 14 seasons and 293 episodes.

Per Variety, during a CBS press briefing in Los Angeles, it was revealed that Star Trek: Discovery‘s Sonequa Martin-Green has joined the cast of Boston Blue. She will play detective Lena Peters, who is partnered with Danny, and is the eldest daughter in a family that has a long history in law enforcement. Martin-Green shared how excited she is to join the series and teased details about the Peters family. Wahlberg, who is also an executive producer on Boston Blue, emphasized that Martin-Green was “not the first choice — the only choice” to play Lena Peters. Check out their comments below:

Sonequa Martin-Green: We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. And I feel that we’ll love the Peters too. I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in a CBS family — and in this family, your family. It means a lot, and I’m grateful for it. I think we’re going to have a good time.

Donnie Wahlberg: One thing about Blue Bloods and how beloved it was is because there are so many law enforcement families in this country. There’s not just the Reagans. They’re in every state, every city, every town, everywhere, and there are other families around that have stories to tell too. Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family. You can’t have Danny without Reagans — there’ll be connective tissue. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.

What This Means For Boston Blue

It Will Explore More Than One Family

Boston Blue has now officially cast one of its most important characters, who, along with their family, will define much of the spinoff’s story. Martin-Green and Wahlberg’s comments emphasize that just as Blue Bloods explores the Reagan family, Boston Blue will explore both the Reagan and Peters families. Lena will not only be working closely alongside Danny, but will also be the audience’s entry point into the Peters family, which will expand the scope of the franchise.

Martin-Green’s remarks about returning to the “CBS family” refer to her experience working with the network and their streaming service during her time on Star Trek: Discovery. In this sense, family will be at the heart of the Reagans’ Blue Bloods spinoff in more ways than one. It is not only a show about two families, but there is a feeling of family among Martin-Green, Wahlberg, and others involved in the show’s development.

Our Take On Boston Blue’s Casting

Sonequa Martin-Green Is A Strong Addition To The Show

Walking Dead Sasha Sonequa Martin-Green looking ahead

Before she played Captain Michael Burnham in seven seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, I was already a fan of Martin-Green after seeing her as Sasha Williams in The Walking Dead and as Tamara in Once Upon A Time. She never fails to impress, and her casting makes me more intrigued by Boston Blue. The focus on both Danny and Lena and the exploration of their respective families has tremendous potential, and can help make the spinoff appealing and accessible to longtime and newer fans of Blue Bloods.
