‘Boston Blue’ Star, 55, Reveals Why He Is the Lead of the ‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off

Donnie Wahlberg is a man of mystery, and he intends to keep it that way. He’s clearly learned a thing or two during his tenure of playing a cop on CBS’ hit series, Blue Bloods, as he’s been able to effortlessly duck and dodge specific questions pertaining to his offshoot project, Boston Blue. We’ve known since the beginning of the year that the title will follow Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as he moves from New York to the titular Massachusetts city to take on a new role in law enforcement. But, if you’re looking for a more detailed reason surrounding the “why” behind it all, don’t expect to get too far with Wahlberg.

During a recent conversion with Parade, the actor said,

“I can’t give you the exact reason why today, because that would be a big spoiler. But I would say this, as family-oriented as Danny is, he’s also always marched to the beat of his own drum. I think those two things can be true at the same time. He can march to the beat of his own drum, and it can still be about family… It’s going to be a journey and a process for him. He’s with the audience who says, ‘I can’t imagine Danny would move to Boston,’ well, neither can he. He’s with you. He’s going to have to figure this out because it’s a dramatic life change.”

The Reagan Family Will Never Be Too Far Away

No matter what Danny’s decision to leave New York City behind to strike out on his own may be, Wahlberg has previously teased that his character’s family will never be too far away — after all, the two cities are easily connected by bus, train, or parkway.

Leaning into the deep connection between the Reagan family tree, Wahlberg said,

“Now, it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it — but I could say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never be just Danny. There’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away. And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”

As of right now, no cameo or guest appearances have been officially set for Boston Blue, but we’d wager that the network has seen the public outcry of support for the Blue Bloods’ continuation and that at least one — if not many — familiar faces will eventually work their way up to Boston.
