After a strong run of 14 seasons, Blue Bloods was canceled by the network, despite strong ratings. But, with spinoff show Boston Blue entering development, the franchise is set to continue, and Wahlberg will head up the new show. The cast of Boston Blue consists largely of new characters, but there is the possibility of legacy actors returning.
Per People, the Blue Bloods legacy star has opened up on the possibility of his former co-star Selleck making an appearance on the spinoff show. Talking about the chances of Selleck’s New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan making an appearance on the show. Hinting that this might be a possibility, Wahlberg mentioned the close proximity between Boston and New York and talked about how the show was important to him. Check out his comments below:
“New York and Boston are really close. Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me.”
What This Means For Boston Blue
A Selleck Appearance Is Likely
Considering the fact that Boston Blue is a continuation of the Blue Bloods story, and Frank Reagan was such a core part of that story, it seems only right that he should make an appearance in the spinoff. In fact, Selleck himself has expressed an interest in returning in the show, so it seems like it’s pretty inevitable at this stage.
He has a long-standing working relationship with Wahlberg, and the fact that both men seem keen on the reunion happening means that this is likely to play a prominent part in the direction the spinoff will take. It’s unclear whether his role will be a recurring one, or if it might just be a single episode, but it is almost certain Selleck will play some part in the show.
Adding more legacy stars to the Blue Bloods spinoff will help bring more viewers to the project and ensure continuity between the shows. There is no indication that talks have occurred with Selleck at present, but getting him on board for the show should be pretty straightforward.
Our Take On A Selleck Boston Blue Appearance
The Show Needs To Stand On Its Own Feet Without Overreliance On Its Predecessor
Selleck would be a fine addition to the show, but Boston Blue needs to be able to exist as its own show without relying too heavily on Blue Bloods. As such, I think that, while the character of Frank would be a welcome addition, it is important that the show only uses him sparingly.
